The best posture to meditate for beginners is the posture that makes you feel the most comfortable. Don't worry if you can't sit cross-legged at least for now.
I would recommend you to try sitting on a chair first. After you are used to keeping the mind centered, you may try sitting again with the half lotus posture later.
