Can Meditation Be Dangerous?

Hey there.
I had a chat with a friend of mine who is very much into the meditation techniques and I told him about my newborn interest of meditation and that i've been trying to meditate.
He told me that meditation can be very dangerous and harmful in some cases as if there isn't an experienced guide towards it and that mental problems can overcome physical ones.
Could you tell me a bit more about that?

Thanks!

Hi Magi, I've been meditating on and off for several years now and while it can be difficult sometimes, it has never been harmful to me. There are possibly some kinds of exercises that are spiritual that require a guide, and meditating in general puts you in touch with parts of your mind that you may unknowingly try to avoid during your normal life. So you can sometimes find things in your mind that bring all kinds of emotions and make you feel uncomfortable. But the nice part about this website is how approachable the meditation techniques are. Relaxation seems to be the number one requirement, and from there the other experiences and concentration come after. This reminder to relax and be a grounding aspect of meditation practice and I encourage you to keep doing it as it really helps clear your mind and brings a sense of feeling centered and at ease. If you don't feel these things from meditation, it's a sign that you may need to change your approach to the meditation. Just wanted to write something to maybe ease your feelings about meditating, especially in this great community here! Peace
